Irony Is Ironic
Donna Sprinkle

Okay, before you say, "That title doesn't make sense", I have to agree with you. Now that's ironic isn't it? But I'll tell you something that seems a little more ironic to me. Skydiving for the prevention of suicide seems a little ironic to me but let me explain.
I heard a news report about a man attempting to draw attention to Suicide Prevention. I am not questioning the need for attention to be drawn to such a worthy cause. I am, however, a little confused by the method he was using to draw the attention.
The story stated that a skydiver was attempting 100 jumps in a 24 hour period by jumping approximately every 6 minutes. Wow, can you imagine that? I would probably get dizzy just running to get on the plane over and over again. Amazing! But for someone like me who is totally unfamiliar with such a sport, this sounds almost suicidal in itself.
But therein lies the problem. Me and my lack of understanding are the problem. I don't know anything at all about skydiving, however, this man obviously knew what he was doing. Although a bit unusual to most of us, he had a driving reason for these jumps. His daughter initiated his interest in skydiving shortly after losing her mother to suicide. Through this he found a way to draw attention to something near to his heart.
Many times not understanding the story behind an action could possibly bring us to a wrong conclusion. For instance, many unbelievers say they think the Bible contains inconsistencies. How do they arrive at such a determination? It is most likely from not knowing the story behind the story.
Bible inconsistency?...Never! Human misunderstanding?...Frequently. No one has all the answers or complete understanding, however, we are told the Holy Spirit will guide us and help us divide the Truth of God's Word and we can KNOW His Word Is completely without error or inconsistency.
It should come as no surprise to us that those who have not accepted Jesus as their personal Savior might erroneously believe they see inconsistencies. But I pray that we as Christians are not too quick use argument as a means to point out their error. But instead may we direct them to the Saving Grace of Jesus Christ knowing the 'Holy Spirit will teach us all things'. (John 14:26). Remember, we all have much to learn.
Just as the skydiver used unusual methods to draw attention to something near to his heart, we too should be ready to draw attention to that which is near and dear to our hearts. His name is Jesus. And face it, in today's world LOVE is certainly an unusual way to do it.
Oh yes, in case you didn't hear, the skydiver broke the world's record by succeeding in his attempts to make 100 jumps in 24 hours. So congratulations to him.
And if you are making others aware of the cause of Jesus Christ then... Congratulations to You!
