Snakes Alive!

2009-07-13

Some are campers and others are not. For me, I always enjoyed going camping because my husband and two young sons did most of the work. They enjoyed putting up the tent and cooking the meals outdoors. It was great. The only thing they really expected me to do was the dishes. But hey, there weren't many so I could live with that! There were some things, however, that I simply could not live with...creatures. You know like bugs, mosquitos, SNAKES and ALLIGATORS!

We usually went to State Park Camp Sites because there was water, electricity and nearby restrooms. And face it, we were wimpy campers. Okay, maybe I was the one who was a wimpy camper but nonetheless we most often stayed in a State Park.

Brazos Bend State Park was one of our favorites to visit because we could see alligators everywhere. However, this was also one of the same reasons for my hesitation to sleep there in a tent.

I suppose I was particularly nervous on one of our trips because we had also taken our very small poodles with us and I was told alligators might decide they would make a tasty meal so I should keep them on a leash. I had no problem with that at all but what if these hungry alligators came looking for a midnight snack of dog inside the tent after we had gone to sleep? Yes, I was certainly a little bit uneasy at night.

The boys slept in a dome tent right next to ours. Our sleeping bags were black but beige on the inside. Although it was dark in the tent, the beige caught the moonlight really well and was easy to see if anything was on the bag.

I finally dozed off and was sleeping pretty well until I woke up for no apparent reason. I began to check my surroundings inside the tent. Then I saw it there on my beige bag right next to me. It was a long black...oh no! Was it a snake? Without thinking I screamed, "Snake!", grabbed the end of it and threw it to the other side of the tent...(my husband's side).

Waking from a dead sleep to a screaming wife who possibly just threw a snake to you was not your normal wake up call. I realized almost immediately I had made a terrible mistake. There was no reason to wake him at all. As soon as I had grabbed hold of the 'snake' to toss it, I could tell it wasn't a snake. However, the scream had already done its job of waking him and probably every other camper nearby.

He didn't seem too relieved when I started laughing. It was obvious to me at that moment just what had happened. One of the poodles had retrieved my husband's long black sock from his boot and placed it on my sleeping bag. I have to admit I felt pretty silly. And my husband is probably still wondering what would cause me to throw 'what I thought was a snake' over to his side of the tent instead of out the door. No excuse...No explanation. I was just acting on an impulse.

Acting on impulse in our Christian walk happens a lot in life doesn't it? We do foolish impulsive things when we are frightened by what life brings our way. Often we do not take the time to ask God what we should do, we just act. Many times those actions can cause harm to those we love the most. On occasion an impulsive action can even bring shame causing some to turn from God instead of toward Him, which by the way is another impulsive action. This should not be. The Bible tells us to 'draw near to God and He will draw near to us'.

In our Christian walk God desires that we look to Him for wisdom for our lives. James 1:6-7 (NLT) tells us "If you need wisdom--if you want to know what God wants you to do--ask him, and he will gladly tell you. He will not resent your asking. But when you ask him, be sure that you really expect him to answer, for a doubtful mind is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind."

He tells us over and over again, "Fear not for I am with you."

So ask God for wisdom, fear not and try to avoid throwing snakes at your spouse.
