Only A Prayer Away

Donna Sprinkle

2009-03-09

Our older son was only a toddler and I had joined him for the nightly ritual of saying prayers before he went to bed. As I sat on the edge of his bed he knelt down to say his prayers. But that particular night the prayer was silent and over almost as soon as he had kneeled down. So I asked, "Did you say your prayers?" The response was a nod and a "uh huh." Then I said, "Really? I didn't hear you." His quick answer was, "Well, I wasn't talking to you." True he wasn't talking to me and yet I'm not quite sure he was talking to God either.

Now I'm pretty sure when you kneel to pray you are actually talking to God. But I wonder how often we simply offer sounds of noise to God. On occasion even prayer 'noise' becomes more ritual and less heartfelt. Prayers offering praise, thanksgiving and petitions are wonderful but how often do we just offer silence to Him...silence giving Him opportunity to communicate with us to give peace, direction and correction? How often are we simply still and quiet before our God without feeling the need to rush back into the noisy busyness of our lives?

Has He shown Himself to you lately? Have you heard Him speak to your heart? Has he shown you who He is? After all, He is:

Jehovah Nissi - (The Lord My Banner)
Jehovah-Raah - (The Lord My Shepherd)
Jehovah Rapha - (The Lord That Heals)
Jehovah Shammah - (The Lord Is There)
Jehovah Tsidkenu - (The Lord Our Righteousness)
Jehovah Mekoddishkem - (The Lord Who Sanctifies You)
Jehovah Jireh - (The Lord Will Provide)
Jehovah Shalom - (The Lord Is Peace)
Jehovah Sabaoth - (The Lord of Hosts)
El Shaddai - (Lord God Almighty)
El Elyon - (The Most High God)
El Olam - (The Everlasting God)
Elohim - (God)
Adonai - (Lord, Master)
Yahweh - (Lord, Jehovah)
Qanna - (Jealous)

Or...maybe He is speaking but you are just not taking time to hear.

When you have prayed your most heartfelt prayers, take time to remember His words in Psalm 46:10.

"BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD."
